We are doing our best (but semi-failing) to try to Die with Zero. To get to that goal, I have integrated musicals and concerts into our schedules. Last year, we went to a few musicals/plays at Conejo Players Theater and a Candlelight Concert in TO. This year, in addition to that, we saw Mrs Doubtfire at the Civics Plaza Center in May and will be seeing Phil Wickham in October. I wanted to kill 3 birds with one stone and see both sides of the parents, but our trip this weekend mainly is to see one of my favorite bands: Walk off the Earth!
On Friday, 7/24, after our customary trip to the gym for my Zumba class, we traveled to SGV to see my parents. We bought them yoshinoya for lunch and I used Anson’s Paze credits to get 3 poke bowls and pizza and wings from Domino’s. Anson went to Home Depot to get lightbulbs for the hallway. My dad is bending his kneeds and is pretty hunched over when walking now and it makes him more prone to fall. He has fallen a few times already. I’m not sure how long they want to live like this and it has been in our conversations for years what they should do in the long run.
We stayed at the El Monte IHG with our free night, worked out at the gym, and checked out at 1pm, walked (in 90 degree heat) 10 mins to WeChat Cafe. I have missed Hong Kong Cafes and ordered the chicken leg over rice that had heaps of scallion oil. I would love to get this again next time we’re in the area. We got an oder of Wendy’s salads from Paze and drove over to our next destination: Hotel Indigo in Downtown LA. After a dinner of poke and salad, concert was at the United Theater. I discovered Walk off the Earth probably 14 years ago. They are an eclectic group that are really talented in singing and playing various instruments. 2 in the group are married and their 3 sons (Illuminati Suns) also played that night. I wished they talked more and went into depth about who they were instead of just…singing lol, and I think I still like WOTE covers more than their original songs, but they are good performers and sounded great live.
On Sunday, we were going to walk to a Presbyterian church, but 25 mins in mid 90 degree heat sounded torturous. We ended up going to the gym, then streaming our church’s service and checking out at 1pm. We were first thinking of going to Anson’s parents’ place for dinner, but it made more sense to have a late lunch so that they could participate in a church event and we could get home a little sooner. Parents really love their kids, and his mom tries to show it in the way she knows how by giving us a lot of food.
All in all, saw both sets of parents and saw one of my favorite bands. I’m glad we went. Maybe next itme, I’ll rethink going to these things in the summer months in LA.
